T
he Langeberg, Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains run across southern South Africa like massive, buckled railway tracks. South of them, the land rolls into the Indian Ocean. To the north it flattens into the Great Karoo. And through it all, European pioneers toiled more than two centuries ago. Swellendam, once the last settlement on the road east from the Cape (Capetown), is an ideal place to start a journey over historic mountain passes.
